We put evolution on the fast track when we decided to perfect the MATCHCAP. The MATCHCAP XL is the culmination of countless trips into the woods and a few fire-related mishaps. We doubled the capacity and increased the striking surface by 250%. This thing is serious!
The MATCHCAP XL™ isn’t limited to just matches. Using a Stormproof (2.9” long) match, the new design leaves 0.3” to spare for tinder storage. If using kitchen matches, nearly half of the MATCHCAP XL™ is available for storage. Use the extra space to store water purification tablets, tinder, medicine, fishing hooks, first aid kit, etc.
For maximum match capacity, place a majority of the matches head up with a few head down.
Carbon Black (No Longer Available)
This is a special edition of the MATCHCAP XL available in type III Hardcoat Anodize. The color is a very matte deep black anodize done using a military spec. process.

As usual, Exotac comes through with excellence in product design and quality. You would think buying one MATCHCAP XL would be enough to last me a lifetime, but it's so good I keep buying them as gifts for friends and family.

Nice and light, yet rugged and built solid. can be used for a multitude of purposes not just to carry matches. easier to use than my old Army issued one.

The MATCHCAP XL is a quality life saving item. It is a great addition to my GO Bag. Extra match capacity for unexpected emergencies is great. I will be ordering some for friends as well. Great quality product that should be functioning fine for many years.

I also have the regular size MatchCap and was extremely pleased with it. The MatchCap XL is every bit as good as the smaller version except bigger and everyone knows tha bigger is better!
Tons of room for matches or tinder or whatever else you want to stuff in it.
There's a hoity toity San Francisco based company out there selling an all aluminum 'survival tube' for $85.00! What a joke! You can't do better than the MatchCap XL and the choice of colors is great.
I opted for Olive Drab and I will be purchasing another in orange very soon.
Highly recommended for any outdoor endeavor or every day carry!

It could not be made better. I'm sure it will keep my matches dry, and insure that they Light under the worst conditions.

OK; to start with the fit & finish on the MatchCap XL are exceptional. The limited edition carbon black (type 111) is very matt and understated. I particularly like the increase in striker surface and feel this will be a great aid in achieving a first strike all of the time. The lanyard attachment is particularly useful and will have many practical applications like lashing to your gear or pulling from a deep pocket. I also like the increase in size and the fact it now accommodates many different size of matches. Being lightweight and weatherproof it's one survival companion you can rely on.

Just want to tell everyone what a great product the Matchcap XL is ! This year I equipped my family with extensive survival kits. Each family member received top quality items to complete each kit. I had some "storm proof" match containers that proved breakable and not so waterproof. I did some research online and found your company. I was very impressed with your product line and USA company and decided to order several items to try out. I was pleased to see the high quality build of your Matchcap XL and filled each up with the stormproof matches you sell. Like some of the other reviewers, I didn't stop there and I purchased your candles and strikers for other fire starting options. The Matchcap XL reminded me of the high quality products that Surefire makes. Fantastic ! Those that are looking should buy at least one.

I have bought two of the Exotac Matchcap XL's, in both the black and carbon black colors. They are top quality and very well made. The threads on the case allow it to screw together xtremely smoothly and solidly. One of my Matchcaps appeared to have excess lubricant on the threads, which got on my fingers and even the phosphorus striker. I don't know if the Matchcap requires some amount of lubrication, but I've heard O rings should be lubricated.
My only warning is that the Matchcap XL doesn't have great capacity. It fits about 21 Stormproof matches, which sorta makes the Matchcap seem like overkill. But it has it's place, and regardless of any cost/benefit analysis, I would get the Matchcap based solely on how well it's put together. Its fun just to open and close it. Also, I use one of my Matchcaps to store emergency cash and a few other items.
Lastly, I might recommend that Exotac consider making a super-size Matchcap that could take the place of the Lifecap, which I believe is discontinued.

Watertight, portable way to store a nano striker, match, needle, suture, tinder, mini tweezers, fish hook, fish weight, .... whatever

I like nearly everything about the Matchcap XL except for just one thing, the little "bail" or loop in the end that will enable you to install a lanyard is sharp on the sides and can cut the cord or string material that you would pass through there.
This is the only thing keeping this from being a 5 Star item.

I'm going to buy another one of these for sure. Super light weight, strong, holds plenty of matches with room for some small tinder. If you take a small ziploc bag (I used the one that came with the NANOSTRIKER XL with extra o-rings) you can fit a petroleum jelly covered cotton ball in it and stuff it in the top of the MATCHCAP XL. It even stays up there when you open it, but pulls out simply when you need it. My only qualm is that the striking surface wears away quickly with use so a few extra included would be nice. That being said, I figured buying a refill pack was a wise decision so I did so when I bought this.

As it was already stated, a cavemans dreams come true! Finally, modern times have reached the trusty but ageing matches. The plastic boxes on the market so far don`t come even close to this fine piece of crafted alloy. Love it.
Greetings from Switzerland

Great match container. It was immediately put to the test when I was caught up in a rainstorm at the summit of Indian Head Mountain in the Catskills of NY. Not a drop of water touched the matches or striker. I'd quickly recommend this product to another hiker/camper.

Now this is a first rate match container that you can trust to keep your matches dry and ready to use. I just love well made things like this and I am glad it is made in the USA.
This sets the standard in my book and it is in my bug out bag ready to go!

The first I bought was the carbon black - this one was in the green. I use these as little survival kits (nano striker with striker off, fishing hooks, sewing needles...etc., tweezers) you can get a number of basic little tools in these and throw on your lanyard and you're off. Would like to see a slightly larger size but this one is really nice. Will probably buy an orange now actually for my matches LOL...

What more is there to say? It is an excellent product. It does what it was designed to do; keep your matches dry. Nicely machined and anodized aluminum. I will be buying another. It is good to see quality American products still being manufactured. Thanks Exotac

The Matchcap XL,a great upgrade from the matchcap original.Still fits in a pocket and plenty of room for matches and tinder, nice lanyard loop to attach to a belt loop or button hole so you won't loose this valuable cargo. Glad I have one, would not go into the woods without.

I've had more than one instance where I've had to search my pack for a good match because half of them got trashed from banging them around. That's what this does well. It's not revolutionary or indispensable but it's just really really nice. This one happens to be built like a tank plenty of striker surface and goes really well with the storm proof matches

While I have only taken the Matchcap XL on one backpacking trip so far I am blown away by how nice this match holder is. The workmanship and quality are excellent. The reads are silky smooth and I find zero rough spots anywhere on the body or cap.
After summer is over I will write a full review of it for BackpackGearTest.org

For the most part I'll go on record as not really being a "match guy". Most hikers, campers & outdoors-people will know why, even if they don't fully agree. The first reason is that matches are pretty limiting, and at best you get one fire per match, not good compared to a lighter or firesteel. I also don't consider matches very reliable. Their main enemy is moisture. Even the best matches (eg UCO Stormproof, REI Storm match) won't light on a wet striker.
That said, I think matches do have a place, especially if you take care to keep them dry. One of the most practical ways to do this is a good quality match safe. I've been doing some research and the Exotac MatchCap looked good but a bit small for my tastes. My preferred match is the UCO and only about a dozen will fit. Relatively recently Exotac came out with a larger, redesigned version called the MatchCap XL. I placed my order for the XL in orange since I intend them to be primarily a survival item. When I can I always choose orange or yellow for survival stuff.
Overall this is a very slickly designed case! It weighs only an ounce and a half and is pretty compact. Testing has shown it to be water tight. It has a disc of sandpaper as well as knurling that can both be used to strike "strike-anywhere" type matches. But the best feature to me is the (replaceable) phosphorus strip glued to the inside of the case. Very nice! It's inside of the O-ring sealer portion where it can't get wet. This means it should be good to go when you need it. Exotac includes a spare o-ring as well as replacement strikers of both types. And they sell refill kits as well. One last touch that I like is the cap which has a loop for clipping to a carabiner or wearing on a lanyard.
I can easily fit 25 UCO Stormproof matches in the case, with a bit of room on top. Exotac says the intentionally make it slightly taller than UCO matches (which they recommend) to accommodate cotton balls or limited bits of survival gear. Very nice.
The only thing I might have preferred would be two striker panels. They wisely made the striker significantly larger than on the smaller MatchCap to address the main complaint of users. It seems that as each match uses some of the phosphorus, most people ran out of usuable striker before running out of matches. The larger striker addresses this but better still would be to have two cut-outs to minimize weight but leave two "columns" for strikers. One would probably be wise to tuck a sealed extra striker inside the safe even if that means carrying a couple less matches. Better, say, 23 that you know will light than 26 and a dead striker.
So far this is just a kitchen table review. When I make out next time I'll see how it holds up to use. I'm pretty confident given the build quality and design that it will be a great match safe.

Similar to the nanoSTRIKER XL, the newly redesigned MATCHCAP XL feels great in the palm of your hand, while remaining comfortable for everyday-carry.
OD Green is just plain sexy!
