We created an evolutionary derivative of the original nanoSTRIKER™ with a larger rod and striker handle. It utilizes the same innovative design as the original, but with just enough extra size and heft to improve its ease of use without making it too big or bulky for key chain carry.
The striker handle is 46% bigger, making it easier to grip. The XL version also sports a 33% larger ferrocerium rod, which improves the durability and lifespan of the rod even beyond that of the original nanoSTRIKER’s.
Slowly scrape shavings off the rod into a small pile. Use these shavings on top of your tinder bundle for even better sparks!
Use the nanoSTRIKER™ to light gas stoves, alcohol stoves, fuel tablets, BBQ grills, etc.
Burns at nearly 5500°F (3000°C)
1/4" waterproof ferrocerium & magnesium rod
Ferrocerium rod works when wet
Lightweight anodized aluminum body
Ultra-sharp tungsten carbide striking tool
More than 3000 fire-starting strikes per rod
Replaceable ferrocerium rod

Nice compact steel and ferrous rod. Throws a mass of sparks and very capable of starting a fire with lint or cotton balls. Highly recommend for a small survival kit or just regular camp use

The nanoSTRIKER XL and MATCHCAP XL are perfect companions for bug-out bags and other adventure gear. I find the quality of EXOTAC products are without equal. Rest assured you will get what you pay for and then some. They have definitely exceeded my expectations!

I was really impressed with the quality of this tool. After about one minute of practice, the sparks were flying. Ultra light - perfect for backpackers. The best part is that the ferrocerium rod is replaceable.
Posted by Unknown on 20th Jul 2015
May be a little pricey, but you very what you pay for. Best ferro rod ever. Water proof, light weight, replaceable rod, super sharp striker... what more do you need. One strike lit some fatwood shavings instantly. Excellent.

Works well I just wish it was a little bigger its pretty small if you have big hands.

This is a great little striker that proves good things come in small packages. It works great and I leave it on my keychain as an EDC option. Used it twice to start a fire and it's worth every penny...

Exotac is Absolutely The Best in Their Class! I have owned many different brands of Fire Starting Rods and Out Of All The Brands and styles I have owned Exotac is # 1
Everything they make is Top Notch, Very High Quality, and Made In The USA,
I Would Recommend Exotac To Everyone. I have been using Exotac for years because they
Work every time I need them, they are very reliable and the nanoSTRIKERS and the
nanoSTRIKER XLs are waterproof, just keep the o-rings on them and the threaded area closed
and you won't have to worry about any water getting on the rods. I also own several their FIRERODS and Keep them Piggy Backed on My ESEE Izula and My ESEE 4. I also wanted to Rate Their Customer Service, I have Spoken With Several People with Exotac and they are the Nicest, Most Helpful, Down to Earth People You Could Ever Talk To. If I could I would rate Exotac and their customer service a 10 out of 10. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK EXOTAC!

Nice, portable and convenient, easy to use but requires many strokes to get a spark.
Solid case and very well designed.
Posted by Shane D on 5th Feb 2015
Small enough for a keychain, big enough for an efficient spark. Been carrying it in my pocket everyday for a few weeks now and just tried it today. Easily lit a cottonball/petroleum jelly "tinder" in 10 degree weather. The Nano XL is built pretty solidly and has rubberized seals to prevent unwanted unthreading of the parts. A very well thought out design backed by a great company.

Well despite the 2 star review it's a nifty little tool, I'll give it that. It's nice and compact which is fantastic. however the most important piece being the striker is terrible. i have large hands and when using this striker, it's comparable to using a push pin to spark this fire steel. not only is the striker to short so is the handle. In my opinion Both the striker and the striker handle could be at least 2x as long. unfortunate considering I paid almost $33.00 for this thing

Great product. Light weight with rigged design. Customer services is extremely friendly and help full in selecting a product.

The perfect blend of size and function.
Posted by Unknown on 30th Mar 2014
The StrikerXL is way more efficient and easier to use than the mgnesium strikers we were issued in survival school. Very high quality product, I am quite pleased with my purchase!

I'm really happy with this. It's the perfect size for me.

When I received the StrikerXL, I looked over it with a fine tooth comb. I was very impressed with the quality of craftsmanship. After using the striker several times on different kindling, I was impressed. It's nice to know someone still cares to build a quality product that performs as advertised.

It's not every day I purchase something this well made. I'm really impressed with the quality of the manufacturing, design, and how well it works. One thing I noticed after using this is that the ferrocerium rod does not pull out from the handle as other ferro rods did that I've purchased. This one is threaded in and holds well. With the option to purchase any replacement parts for this ferro rod I'm sure this will be with me for many years to come.

This is by far my favorite firestarter, I carry it daily for emergencys and it perfect in size for any situation you may run into. Don't look anywhere else this is exactly what you need for a firestarter. Plus it's made in the good ole u,s of a

The storage case is solid, well threaded, and the o-ring will keep the rod pristine for a long time. That's a major concern out here, since I'm out and about the ocean every day, and the salt water makes metals deteriorate quickly. This thing sits in my leatherman case, and is with me always.

I have ordered tons of products from Exotac and I like them all. This nanoXL is also nice HOWEVER, I would much rather this be combined with the fireROD with a tinder storage case. It simply would make more sense since this is really not that much different than a regular nano. It just doesn't offer much more. If you need something larger than the regular nano - get the fireROd - you'll like it more. ALSO - the green color this came in is much darker than the green reg nano/fireROd/ and matchcase...etc
Posted by Carol Bentley on 21st Apr 2013
I like the heft of the nanoSTRIKER XL. More room to hold the striker with older fingers.
Would have given a 5 STAR rating except I have concerns there is not enough material left above the hole made for the small keyring and am not sure how long this will hold up to lots of carry before it wears through. The regular nanoSTRIKER I have has more material left above top of the hole.

I was a little disappointed at the time of ordering that I couldn't get an orange nanoSTRIKER XL, all that was in stock at the time was the olive drab or gun metal. That disappointment was quickly over come when the package arrived. The fit and finish of the product is great. The quality is top notch. The amount of spark that comes off is amazing. when combined with a char cloth or petroleum cotton ball, it's an amazing fire starter. Even just a regular cotton ball catches the sparks and ignites instantly.
I'm extremely happy with the product, and will be buying more in the future for other packs.
Posted by Carol Bentley on 14th Apr 2013
I like the extra heft of the XL. Older hands and fingers appreciate the little bit of extra room on the Striker and the heavier diameter rod gives me more assurance against breaking it. The only reason I gave 4 STARS is the area where split ring attaches. There is less metal left at top than with the regular nanoSTRIKER. Am afraid carrying the striker long term may cause it to wear thru. Suggest this be fixed on future runs. Will attach paracord thru hole on striker and wear around my neck to keep it safe from loss.
Posted by Dennis Franks on 12th Apr 2013
A quality product. This will be a back up firestarter. They will reside on my two packs-one for day treks, the other for extended treks.
Posted by dave on 14th Mar 2013
i got my exotac xl about three weeks ago, tried starting some fires in our backyard firepit with it it works just great. I put some paracord on the loop hole so i can wear it around my kneck when camping love this thing! the only drawback was that it was just a tad small otherwise great!

So I don't do reviews, but I DO buy a lot of outdoor equipment, and I have a thing for trying to buy good quality stuff. The problem is everything is made cheap these days and without the 'practical' thought in mind.
I also like nice looking things. They have to be practical first above everything else, but something with a little style makes you feel good about owning it too.
Exotac are really pushing the bar for extremely practical and high build quality in the realm of outdoors equipment. Light, waterproof, exceptionally easy on the eyes, and with a feel like when I pulled my Katadyn Pocket water filter out of the box. Solid. Made to last.
If you're looking at buying anything in the way of fire-starting equipment and take a pride in the equipment you own and depend on, you really don't need to look anywhere else.
Hopefully Exotac will continue the great work and expand their product base. With work like this, you have a lifetime customer with me.

Great design, and works well. Rather small striker for someone with large paws, but mine are small, so I like it.
Posted by Chris on 24th Jan 2013
From the packaging to the performance this is a top notch fire starter. This nanoSTRIKER XL is light weight but performs with ease. I like the weight of the item and the feel. Striking the bar is simple at fits in my hands easily. Buy one and you wont regret it.

My son-in-law was very happy to receive it.
Posted by ShelterMe on 23rd Dec 2012
I was attracted to this item because the rod itself and striker screw into a compartment which becomes the handle, protecting both from being broken. I have broken a LMF Firesteel on a key ring before rendering it useless. The blaze orange aluminum makes this ferro kit more visible than just a brightly colored plastic handle which some ferro rods have. Plus you can't go wrong with being able to order a replacement parts for under 8 bucks making this tool essentially brand new again. Overall top-shelf quality, bulletproof and exceptionally well thought-out. Love it.

I ordered the nano XL and it works great and the fit and finish it top notch.
Posted by Garbe on 10th Dec 2012
I have been carrying a Nano Striker XL on my key chain for the past 11 months. I've started several fires with it. It's by far my favorite fire steel and striker. The best I own and I've tried most of them out there. Since then I've bought 2 more. They are the perfect size. They don't take up too much room in your pocket but are large enough to easily use
Posted by Kurt R on 26th Nov 2012
This unit works I tell you! I showed my younger brother and he bought one too!! Dependable, waterproof, and sparks everytime.
Posted by Troy Tibbetts on 6th Nov 2012
The best fire steel I have used to date. It throws bigger, better, and more spark than ones I have used twice it's size. The fact that it comes in such a small foot print is great, you can put this thing anywhere and still have it handy. The bigger thumd hold on the XL striker is great, I have good sized hands and this works out for me. Due to the size it is also great at aiming the sparks as well and the refills for the rod it a asset. i can carry the nanoSTRIKER XL and a rod refill and I am still under the weight of my former fire steel. Great job EXOTAC.
O'yeah MADE IN THE USA......

This is actually my second one. My original one was taken by a friend who liked it so much he asked to borrow it permanently. Using this for about a year now the XL is really nice because of the larger rod and striker. Still small enough to fit in a pocket with keychain. Ultimately reliable. Highly recommend

this thing is built like a tank. keep it in my pack at all times.
wouldn't go out without it. strikes every time.
exotac as a whole is amazing.

I tested the striker lighting a gas bar b que. Got the thing lit on the first try.

Had this for two weeks and already started four fire s with ease. Puts out lots of sparks and burns long enough to get a good flame going

Small, lightweight, attach it to keys, and most important you can buy a couple of replacement striker rods and pretty much never run out.

Look forward to using it in the field

I love this tool as it is well designed and the craftmanship is top notch. Perfect for your bug out bag or just in your pocket. Never leave home without it.

The nanoSTRIKER XL works as well as the nanoSTRIKER but its not that XL, not much bigger then the original. I do like that it fits on a regular sized keychain where the original doesn't. I think they both work very well but I will stick with the nanoSTRIKER rather then the nanoSTRIKER XL. Unless you make it about 1/4" longer :-)
Posted by Waykno on 31st Jul 2012
I like all about this item but the striker is a tad small, it does work though. And the sparks are not as plentiful as my other rods. But, it is a smaller rod also. Overall, quality is first rate and it will start a fire.
Posted by Scott H. on 26th Jul 2012
This striker throws some sparks it will get included on all my outdoor trips
Posted by Andrew B. on 16th May 2012
Simply put... ...this is a must have for any outdoor enthusiast or prepper.
Posted by Unknown on 4th May 2012
This is hands down one of the easiest fire-steel to use. I was packing for a trip and wanted to test it out new, and had a fire going with the packaging it came in, in less that 3 minutes. This is going into my camping pack for every trip from now on!

Una gran opción como iniciador de fuego, mucha atención y calidad en sus acabados!!
me llego en color verde, se ve de lujo.

This will replace any fire steel you might have already. Easy to use, produces showers of hot flaming bits of metal, ignites tinder super quickly. Weighs very little, takes up almost NO space. Beautifully made, watertight, rugged. Just the ultimate fire starter - the last one you may ever buy. Although you might want two, they are so nice! If you love fine gear, this is a must have.

Hardcore product, with excellent attention to detail. The increased diameter is an excellent upgrade over the original nanoSTRIKER.
